Point Walking Tour during Trails & Sails

SALEM — The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association, founded to preserve the famed Turner-Ingersoll Mansion —known to many as The House of the Seven Gables — and to provide support services for newly arriving immigrants in 1910, will sponsor a Trails & Sails walking tour of Salem’s Point Neighborhood on Saturday, September 23, beginning at 1 p.m. The Point Neighborhood has long been one of the enclaves for immigrant families in Salem. Elizabeth Duclos-Orsello, Ph.D., and professor at Salem State University, will lead the tour that focuses on work in the mills, small neighborhood business, housing and homes, with a special focus on sites where women work. To find out more about what has made this historic neighborhood function through the years, those interested are welcome to join the tour free of charge. The tour will last between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on crowd size. Those participating are asked to meet at Lafayette Park, on the corner of Washington and Lafayette streets, in Salem. Elizabeth Duclos-Orsello, Ph.D., is professor and chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies and coordinator of the American Studies program at Salem State University. She has a wide-ranging professional background in museums, education and nonprofits, and her research interests include cultural institutions and social justice work. Linking the social sciences and humanities, her scholarship, teaching and public humanities work primarily explores the complex issues of identity, social change and community in the United States with a focus on race, class, gender, immigration, religion and ethnicity, often with a transnational focus. She is a two-time Fulbright Scholar, co-director of the Franco-American Salem project and author, most recently, of the forthcoming book, “Bonds of Fellowship: Redefining Community in Modernizing America.”
