The Hawthorne Hotel has been an integral part of the city of Salem since its completion in 1925. The beautifully restored, stately federal style hotel is named for author Nathaniel Hawthorne, who grew up in Salem, worked as surveyor of the Port at the Custom House and wrote The Scarlet Letter from his nearby home. In a prime location in the heart of Salem, overlooking Salem Common and the Witch Museum and just steps from the PEM, House of the Seven Gables, Pickering Wharf and Front Street, the Hawthorne is the perfect base for exploring Salem and the North Shore.
Guest rooms, many with views of the historic town or Common, strike a balance of contemporary and classic with updated furnishings and carpeting, gold details and comfortable amenities. Perfect for event accommodations or simply a quick get-away.
The Hawthorne is home to two popular Salem dining destinations: the Tavern and Nathaniel’s Restaurant.
Nathaniel’s serves breakfast daily and dinner Thursday through Saturday evenings, featuring live acoustic entertainment. The Tavern is open year-round from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., offering a relaxed pub atmosphere with oak-paneled walls and a cozy wood-burning fireplace.
In 2025 the Hawthorne celebrated its 100th anniversary and was named Historic Hotels of America Best Historic Hotel. A proud member of Historic Hotels of America and New England Inns & Resorts, the Hawthorne is a certified Age-Friendly Salem business. Free on-site parking. Fully accessible. Welcoming to all.
